What St. Kate’s Students Are Working On

Gender & Sexuality Initiatives // St. Kate’s MPIRG students worked very closely this year with Women’s Advocates, Inc to raise awareness around domestic violence.  At several points throughout the year, MPIRG students put on Spare Change for Social Change events to raise funds for meals and needs at the shelter.  In addition to service work, MPIRG students hosted a Body Week that involved interactive art exhibits, a movie screening, and several educational forums about eating disorders and body image.  MPIRG students are also putting together the entirely student written and directed Student Monologues.  The Student Monologues will chronicle life experiences of St. Kate’s students with domestic violence and sexual assault.

Detox Minnesota // MPIRG students worked with students from across the state to help pass the first phase-out of Bisphenol-A (BPA) from childrens products.  To educate the campus and nearby community about harmful chemicals in consumer products, St. Kate’s MPIRG students hosted a Detoxify Your Life event where attendees could make their own cleaning products, win body-friendly cosmetics, and research what chemicals are in their everyday products.  In addition to educational events, St. Kate’s MPIRG students advocated for this issue at the Minnesota state legislature, meeting with their elected officials and encouraging them to support this legislation.

Environment // In addition to the Detox Minnesota campaign, the MPIRG Environmental Taskforce at St. Kate’s also worked on the Clean Car Standards this year.  They attended the Clean Car Lobby Day in the spring, partnered with the Student Senate Sustainability taskforce and WAVE to push for composting on campus, and hosted a Paint Your Bike Day for Earth Week.

Affordable Higher Education // To combat rising textbook costs, MPIRG students partnered with professors and the St. Kate’s bookstore to submit a photo petition to several major publishers of textbooks asking them to stop selling bundled books.

What’s Next? // This year, St. Kate’s MPIRG students will be working on issues such as health care, the environment, and gender & sexuality initiatives.
